CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of many cannabinoids found in hemp. Parents of dogs, cats, and pets should understand what pet CBD is, how it differs from intoxicating THC, what a product label says, and what quality documentation covers before choosing any hemp-derived product.
What Is the Endocannabinoid System?
Dogs, cats, and many other pets have an endocannabinoid system, often shortened to ECS. It includes naturally occurring signaling compounds, receptors, and enzymes. Researchers continue to study how cannabinoids interact with this system in different species.
The existence of the ECS does not mean that every CBD product has the same composition, quality, or effect. Product-specific details and your pet's individual health context still matter.
CBD, THC, Hemp, and Product Types
CBD and THC are different cannabinoids. Product labels may also use terms such as full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate to describe the cannabinoid ingredients. Companion Pet Company soft chews are formulated with CBD isolate.
The current third-party report posted by Companion covers the submitted CBD isolate ingredient sample, not a finished soft chew. In that ingredient report, total delta-9 THC was listed as not detected. Always check the scope, batch number, and date of any COA before interpreting it.
What to Look for on a Pet CBD Label
- Amount per chew: Confirm how many milligrams of CBD the label lists in each unit.
- Complete ingredient panel: Review every ingredient, especially for a pet with food sensitivities.
- Intended pet size: Choose a product format that makes the labeled serving practical for your dog, cat, or pet.
- Company contact information: A responsible label should make it easy to ask product questions.
- Storage and serving directions: Follow the product label rather than relying on a general online chart.
What Quality Documentation Can Tell You
A Certificate of Analysis can document the tested sample, laboratory, methods, compounds or contaminants included, results, and reporting limits. Questions to Ask Before You Begin
Talk with your veterinarian about your pet's health history, current medications and supplements, age, and the reason you are considering CBD. Follow the label and observe your pet carefully. General education cannot replace an examination, diagnosis, or treatment plan from the veterinarian who manages your pet's care.
